Wacom cintiq companion review

Surface Pro 2 vs Cintiq Companion

I before I landed with my Surface Pro 2, I actually spent a week with a Cintiq 22HD and a week with a Cintiq Companion Hybrid. The software that Wacom bundled with the Hybrid was pretty much garbage. The Photoshop Express app that you can get for Android is pretty much only for minor photo editing, though the Android version of Sketchbook Pro is really pretty amazing. The thing is, if you get her an Companion Hybrid, its pretty much just an oversized, overpriced Android tablet that you can hook up to a laptop or desktop as a Cintiq. I don’t think it’s worth the cost

Based on my what you’ve sort of mentioned in these comments, – my purchasing recommendation for your daughter would be getting her the $999 model of the Surface Pro 2. If you’re daughter is 13, that’s going to give her all the power she’s going to need getting started doing digital work, it’s going to be a lot more portable and less heavy and clunky than carrying around a Cintiq Companion, and it’s going to get you the most bang for your buck.

Let me put it like this – for the same price that you were willing to spend on your daughter getting her a Cintiq Companion Hybrid – which was what around $1500? – you can probably get her the $999 model of the Surface Pro 2, a Type Cover 2 ($129), Manga Studio 5 ($40), a new Wacom Stylus for it, which is recommended ($40-$80), and any other accessories you might need for it for her and you’d still come in under the price of the Hybrid and have 2x the functionality of it.

She would then have an ultra portable laptop that she could do both homework and artwork on, and she’s be running one of the best art programs in the world for creating 2D graphics artwork on.

I really think the versatility and form factor of the Surface Pro 2 wins out vs. the Companion in this case. Especially the weight of the two – if your daughter is only 13, the Companion is twice the weight of the Surface Pro. I’m a 32 year old man, and the weight difference was a factor for me.

It seems that you’re leaning towards a Cintiq for your daughter in some form, and that’s awesome. But I think if she’s starting out, that’s going to be an expensive piece of hardware for her to be starting out on. With a Surface Pro 2, you can get everything that the Cintiq Companion was rocking, but it’s a little more versatile and a little easier to manage in terms of form and bulkiness.

Again, it’s just looking at what your daughter really needs at 13. If you have any other questions that I might be able to help you with, Sean, you can e-mail me at jonathan [at] and I’d be happy to help you weigh the pros and cons of all the devices.
